How to see a stereogram

  1. Bring your face close to the screen so the picture is blurry.
  2. Look through the screen, as if at something far behind it. Don't try to focus.
  3. Move back slowly, keeping that relaxed, far-away gaze. The two dots at the top become three: hold it there.
  4. Wait a few seconds. The hidden shape slowly appears in depth.

Questions

What is a stereogram?

A stereogram (or autostereogram) is a flat picture made of a repeating pattern that hides a 3D shape. When your eyes look past the picture, each eye lines up a slightly different repeat, and your brain reads the small differences as depth.

Why can't I see it?

Most people need a few tries. Don't focus on the pattern: look through it. Use a big screen, view it full size, start with an Easy one, and give it 20 to 30 seconds. About 1 in 20 people can't see them because the two eyes don't work together for depth, which is normal.

Are these the same as Magic Eye pictures?

They work the same way as the Magic Eye books made popular in the 1990s. Ours are made by GildPix from our own art and are not affiliated with Magic Eye Inc.

Can I make my own?

Yes: the stereogram generator hides any short message in a picture you can download or send as a link.
